Allan Hugh Clarke spent part of his career teaching at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Prior to the 1940s, Clarke's work was primarily figurative and representational, with an emphasis on printmaking. He gravitated towards Cubism later in his career, creating still life compositions reminiscent of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
As American artists of the 1940s embraced the emerging Abstract Expressionism movement, Clarke's work reconciled the new style with the artistic traditions from the turn of the century. His work reflects an awareness of Fauvist (Matisse) and Post-Impressionist (Cezanne) aesthetics as precursors to Analytic Cubism. His choice of subject matter for this painting - the slagpile, or mountain of waste created as a byproduct of mining - reflects his memories of life in mining regions of Western Pennsylvania.
