Natural disasters can strike anywhere and anyone. While there are some areas of the world safer than others, almost every area of the world can be effected by some type of natural disaster: earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, floods, sand storms, droughts, volcanoes, landslides, and tornados.
The recent hurricane that hit the United States in October 2012, Hurricane Sandy, caught most of the residents and businesses unprepared and is expected to cost over $63 billion US dollars to repair the damages. The earthquake and following tsunami that hit Japan and the Asian coast in 2011 caused the death of over 15,000 people and Japan is still recovering both physically and economically.
Once a tragedy occurs, governments, businesses and individuals rethink many things. Cities and states try to develop plans that will better prepare them in the future to deal with such emergencies and develop evacuation plans. Hospitals review their ability to remain operative in an emergency. Utility companies establish contingency plans to keep power available. Special training for police, firefighting and emergency forces are increased.
While public support and aid is usually made available soon when those major disasters that make the news happen, there are minor natural disasters almost every day that for the most part go unnoticed except by those affected. And to those involved, no disaster is "minor" as homes, businesses and lives are still lost.
In some types of disasters, such as the severe non-seasonal droughts occurring in Africa, it becomes more difficult to send aid and support. These types of disasters can last decades, effect mostly small communities and the form of aid needed is not always a quick solution. These type of disasters involve harsh environments and the recovery process requires drastic changes to the permanent environment.

A choice for those looking for a job is to work for a small or large company. Large companies have more than 500 employees, small companies have less than 100 and medium-sized companies fall in-between.
Smaller businesses offer some great opportunities. They usually promote from within, have more flexible hours, and care more about their employees' well-being. Small companies offer a major benefit for people who like to do different tasks because work duties tend to be less specialized and usually go beyond what was originally expected. This provides opportunities for diverse responsibilities and experiences.
On the negative side, small companies tend to pay less, usually have poor health care packages, and overload employees when other workers are gone. They have much less job stability as small businesses are usually the first to be hit by a bad economy.
Large businesses also can offer great opportunities. They do not promote from within as often as smaller companies, but more chances for promotion are available because the companies are larger and have more positions to offer. They also have better salaries, health care and vacation packages. Perhaps the most important benefit of a large company is a single bad decision by one department, or by the company management, is less likely to result in the company falling into financial distress, which happens often in small businesses.
Conversely, large businesses tend to place employees in specific roles; if such roles are not suitable, they can make the employee fail and dislike his/her job. Also trying to make a change is often harder in larger businesses, because to initiate a change in a large company could mean changing many things throughout the company.
