Purpose:

Reflective essays in this course are your opportunity to connect your life experiences with all the course content. Critical thinking and reflection are essential as you examine and identify the complexities, social constructions and intersectionalities of race, class, and gender.

In addition to substantial reflection, your essay must be at least 600 words in length. Every essay must include a reference to at least 2 examples or quotes or videos or textbook articles from the youtube video provided below. Use quotes judiciously - to make a specific point, not fill up space - and cite the textbook or page number if there are ones.

Directions:

1.) Please complete the attached "Multidimensional Model of Black Identity" (MMBI) below. (This is a personal survey, and you do not have to submit it.)

2.) Based on your responses write an essay in response to the question: "How do I identify and why?"

Write about what you learned about racial identity formation. You should reflect on what you learned about yourself. You should consider the following: race/ethnicity, class, gender, religion/spirituality, sexuality, family make-up, politics, and work. Feel free to include any other aspects of your identity, but please refrain from including personal traits and interests (i.e., "I'm funny" "I like to take the initiative", "I enjoy cooking" etc.).
