Can you help me to provide all the signs of life you notice (through sight, sound, feel, and sensation). Bring your attention to the main spheres covered in physical geography (atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere) that are playing out around you, but especially focus on the biosphere which includes plants, insects, and animals. Also bring your attention to any physical senses you experienced, or feelings that were evoked by sitting or moving quietly and engaging all of your senses.
Can you help me to write about the earth's ongoing functions that you overlook in your normal daily rush, like little insects moving around or how plants move in the breeze, etc... In Western society, we usually see ourselves as separate from the natural world, but that is not the case in all cultures. For example, in Fijian villages where there is no concrete, only grass, rocks, water, and soil; people don't wear shoes or sandals most of the time because they believe that shoes disconnect them from the earth which is part of them as well as their ancestors. So, after spending several months there, I became accustomed to walking around barefoot, and came to realize that I had been missing out on this unique sense of feel all these years by wearing shoes. Unfortunately, it is not feasible to go barefoot in my everyday life here in the U.S., but when I can, I always take my shoes off and try to appreciate feeling the grass, soil, or sand under my feet. Give it a try!
