Topic: Importance of Mental Health in the Society
Mental health awareness is the process through which individuals are educated on the impacts of mental illnesses on their lives and informed about the mental health services in their residences. Most times, people do not realize how much their mental health is affected by life stressors. Individuals need to work on the factors that make their mental health deteriorate. By doing so, it will become easier for them to maintain positive mental health.
Mental health is crucial in society since it determines how individuals handle stress and relate to others. Our mental health influences our quality of life, and the community should give it importance, just like physical health. Connell, O'Cathain, and Brazier (2014) explained in their findings, "Interviewees were asked what would improve quality of life it tended to be the absence of the distressing negative feelings that took precedence rather than the presence of the positive aspects of well-being. They explained that this was due to the all-consuming nature of depression, over which they felt they had no control. They could obtain some relief from anxiety or intrusive voice" (p.14).
Additionally, the community contributes to mental health by making individuals feel connected. Having connections with individuals makes people feel wanted and loved, which improves their mental health. When someone lacks a sense of belonging, they become lonely and may end up depressed. Therefore, society plays a vital role in enhancing the mental health of individuals. Duncan et al. (2021) stated, "For example, if communities can simultaneously tackle social isolation, loneliness, and financial stress, this may create a solid foundation for individuals to build resilience to other problems. Evidence suggests that social support may moderate environmental vulnerabilities and confer resilience to stress". (p.9)
Treating all mental health conditions will help to address specific behaviors that might impact society negatively. When community members understand mental health issues, they will support individuals suffering from mental illnesses. Thus, a person who is suicidal may decide to continue living when people around them show support. It will also be easier for them to go to therapy when they feel understood than when they are stigmatized. They will seek help whenever they feel troubled compared to when society does not take mental health seriously like physical health.
Finally, individuals learning the importance of mental health will reduce its impact on society. It will reduce suicides since individuals will have fewer mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Individuals will appear happier, and the number of people suffering from depression will decrease significantly. Eventually, people will learn how they can engage with others to prevent the mental health issues they are facing from reoccurring. Hence, mental health awareness makes it easier for individuals to know how to cope with life stressors.
