Case: Using the textbook, A World of Art by Henry M. Sayre. Write about "Starry Night" by Vincent van Gogh.

Write down the basic information of the piece including (1) the artist name, (2) the title of the piece (titles are always italicized), (3) the medium/media (4) dimensions/size (if given) (5) year (if given). You will also have to upload an image of your given artwork in order to be able to reference the written information.

Is your chosen artwork 2-D, 3-D, or time-based? Is it architecture? Remember that drawing, painting, printmaking, and photography are examples of 2-D artwork. Also, sculpture, ceramics, fiber-works, and installations are examples of 3-D artworks. Time-based media or expanded media can consist of films, videos or performances. Architecture both creates interior spaces and wraps them in an expressive shape. No matter what sort of structure they are building, architects address and integrate three key issues: function (how a building is used); form (how it looks); and structure (how it stands up). Please read and refer to individual chapters in our textbook that reflect your chosen artwork.

Based on the information discussed in our class lectures, is the 2-D work representational, abstract, non-representational/non-objective? Why? In regards to the 3-D work, how is the work being displayed? Is it freestanding, on a pedestal, installation (activating a space/architecture), in a vitrine, or a case? How is the time-based media being displayed? If it is a piece of architecture, give a brief description of its location and categorize the type.

Utilize at least FIVE art element terms and at least FIVE design principle terms in your written response for the artwork. Go into detail about what you see, using the aforementioned vocabulary. These formal terms help us navigate the content and critical issues of each respective work of art. These terms are provided in the module, but can also be found in our textbooks.

Summarize the content of the work. Remember that content refers to the message or meaning of the work of art-what the artist expresses or communicates to the viewer. You must consider all of our discussions and lectures throughout the semester. Think about how the materials or means of production might create a greater understanding of the artwork. How does the media in the artworks help facilitate the content of the chosen works? Is the process revealed or suppressed? If you are writing about a time-based piece, how is time factored in the work?

Include your personal response to the work and how it affects you as a viewer (opinions, emotions). Be sure to include how or why the piece particularly evoke these feelings or thoughts. Note that when discussing your feelings, you need to move well beyond, "I like it" or "I don't like it, "or "It's neat," or "It's ugly". Your response must be clear and in complete sentences in order to get credit.
