Grandmother project as an organization

-Grandmothers and elderly women are underutilized in creating and implementing community development programs
- The older population is growing very fast in Africa
- Many elderly women are taking care of orphans or their grandchildren because of the impact of HIV/AIDS
- Women of reproductive age are willing and do listen to the elderly women
- Grandmothers and elderly women are not given the opportunity to learn as they are counted out of behavioral interventions
- This population experiences discrimination based on their age and are thought to be against change which results in their under utilization.

Goal: To empower elderly maternal figures to work with the community and improve child and infant mortality with referral to care through mobile clinics.

Intervention 1: Work with Grandmother project

Intervention 2: Mobile health clinic → Mama-Pikin

Year 1: Collaboration with organizations, local government, & training GMP health workers, training mobile clinic staff
Year 2: GMP health workers (3-4 villages), mobile clinic/ Midterm evaluation
Year 3: GMP health workers for the whole district
Year 4: evaluation for entire district

PROPOSAL

1. Community health workers to empower, educate, and promote health through elderly maternal figures

Specific aim

Aim 1: Education on basic medical knowledge, including nutrition, prenatal care, family planning, common infectious diseases (Ebola, etc.)
Aim 2: Training on water & sanitation practices, domestic violence counseling
Aim 3: referral to mobile clinic & vaccinations

Strategy

-send out health counselors by population in each district

-set training materials

-working with the community and meeting weekly (biweekly)

Background & Rationale

1. Current healthcare delivery system in Sierra Leone

Evidence Based Strategy & Delivery: We propose to use Grandmother Project health development workers to empower, educate, and promote health through elderly maternal figures.

A. Partner with GMP who will provide health development workers and health education on topics

B. Health development workers will meet with village head in Pujehun to explain importance in being trained in different topics and benefits of EMF having knowledge

C. Recruit EMFs by providing funding during the training

D. Train EMFs during the school year for about 3 months and provide childcare if they keep orphans/grandchildren

• Educate on selected topics of nutrition education, prenatal care, family planning, , water sanitation education (boiling water, hand washing etc), common infectious disease (malaria, HIV,etc)
• Inform EMFs of mobile clinic and its benefits and teach them how to persuade mothers to go to the clinic

E. Collaborate with the mobile clinic to provide EMFs to go inside and utilize services

• Possibly provide incentives to EMFs who send the first 5 people to the mobile clinic per village
