Participant
Navneet Kaur is 32 years old female working as a full-time enrolled nurse in RIDLEYTON GREEK HOME FOR THE AGED(please search about this industry as you have to write down about organisational hierarchy or you can write any aged care hierarchy ) inAdelaide, south Australia. She is married with no kids. Her husband lives overseas. She is independent women. She worked as a personal care worker for 5 years in southern cross aged care. Now she is working from 6 months as enrolled nurse. Navneet has completed diploma of nursing to get this job.
Procedure
Navneet was observed in the pm shift from3-11pm on a weekday. Researcher observed KSAO (knowledge, abilities and other characteristics). After finishing her shift researcher interviewed Navneet and asked her to complete the surveys. Please expand this part little more if you can by looking from the example reports.
Observation
Write about anything that enrolled nurses do during their job at aged care
Navneet starts her shift by taking handover from previous shift nurse. She then does some paperwork on computer and checks any additional notes on progress book. She administers morning medication to all the residents. After that she does her paperwork. Then she prepares lunch time medication and administer. During the shift she changes wound dressings of residents. She helps the carers if needed. She took urine samples of few residents.
The Research Report
Sequence of Completing the Research Report
• Write your introduction
• Write the method
• Interpret the data
• Write the results
• Write the discussion
• Write the abstract and title
• Ensure all referencing and formatting is in line with APA 6th Edition conventions
Introduction
(600 words approx.)
Understanding the Industry
Position your participant's job within a broader industry.
E.g. an accountant in a pharmaceutical company would best align with the accounting or finance industry.
It's best to talk about the broader industry (e.g. retail) in the introduction, rather than the specific job position (e.g. cashier at Woolworths).
You need to make the best decision possible as to what industry your participant works within. You can check your decision with your tutor in class.
Tools to Help Match the Industry
• Have a look through this list (in the link below) to find which industry your participant's occupation sits within. It has specific job occupations, that are classified by sub-industry and primary industry.
• To find literature, it is good locate the broad industry and not be too specific.
Research Your the Industry
Start by looking at the Bureau of Statistics
Find out how many people work in your chosen industry and about the industry in general
Then start looking forward peer-reviewed literature: journal articles, books, book chapters, theses, conference papers, government and industry reports.
Write Your Introduction
Your introduction should start by explaining the brief history, size and significance of the industry and/or occupation.
Discuss what research has found overall about your industry in terms of the psychosocial work environment, the key job demands, threats, resources etc.
Briefly introduce and discuss literature on worker burnout, job engagement and psychosocial safety climate in your chosen industry.
It is helpful to write a paragraph or so or each construct.
Finish by describing the purpose of the current study
Write the Method
Briefly describe what did you do in this study and how you did it.
You need to provide a set of instructions so that another person could replicate your study in exactly the same way. Keep it as succinct as possible.
Participant
• Brief, relevant and de-identified details of the person you interviewed and their workplace. Keep the organisation anonymous wherever possible!
• You can include information such as job title, industry, job requirements, roles etc.
Procedure
State exactly what you did here including the research design. You may like to provide the duration and time of your participant's usual shift(s). Here you also need to state what measures you administered and provide the references.
Write about the Observations & Context
• You can use the sub-heading Observations & Context for this first part of the results.
• First provide some text on any key observations or context that is relevant or important to note.
• You may include information about their work station, their daily movement, how they communicated with others etc. The more depth the better!
• In a table, describe what are the knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics (KSAOs) of your participant's work
• The more detailed the better!
• Make sure you include a table title
• Format to APA standards
In a table, describe any particular demands such as physical, cognitive, behavioural, emotional or interpersonal demands/threats you observed or suspect.
Interpret the data you collected from the psychological scales - did the worker have high/low levels of engagement/burnout/PSC? Provide scientific statement about your results. Don't leave it up to your reader to interpret your table!
Discussion
• Start with one sentence summarising the point of the study.
• Structure your discussion around each construct (e.g. burnout) and briefly recap what you found (e.g. Jo reported high burnout) before interpreting your findings.
• The main purpose of the discussion is to draw upon your observations and the contextual information (work demands, KSAOS) to interpret and explain the findings (e.g. the scores).
• E.g., Claire's high score for emotional exhaustion situates her in the high risk category for burnout (Dollard & Bailey, 2014). It is plausible that her elevated score were associated with PhD demands. Because Claire indicated a future employment opportunity was contingent on successfully completing her PHD within 3 months.
Then, where possible, you can briefly relate your findings back to the literature that you have cited in your introduction
• Briefly address any qualifications or reservations that you have about your results and some areas for future research in this area.
• Only provide 2 limitations maximum!
The discussion should end with a concise and clear summary about what you found and what your findings may imply.
Title
• Your title should be unique to your research, inform the reader about the study.
• It should mention all 3 constructs (full names/not abbreviated) and be informative
• Around 15 words length.
• Feel free to get creative!
Abstract
• Your abstract should be a short summary of the report, including your research questions, how you went about your observations, the results and discussion points.
• Good abstracts finish with a recommendation for future research.
• Should be between 150-200 words in length.
