Write a Poem
CONFESSION POEMS
Step 1:
Start with "Once I..." Write 35 words about a lie you've told. Use names and specifics. Say what the lie was, why you told it, and what the consequences were. It's okay to make the whole thing up, if needed. Label this "Warm Up A". Write the number of words at the end.
Then, starting with words like "And once I..." write 35-50 words about something you "stole" (took without permission, borrowed and never returned). Say what you took, why you took it, and the consequences. Label this "Warm Up B".
Step 2:
Choose two "frailties" from the list below that you connect to or that you're willing to imagine things about).
"Frailties List"
taking more than your share
pretending to be sick
blaming someone else for something you did
saying something mean
being thoughtless/cruel to animals
breaking a promise
repeating (or making up) gossip
Starting with language like "Another time..." or "I also..." or "Although I didn't mean..." write up -- in 35-50 words each -- the two items you choose. Feel free to exaggerate or lie. Label these "Warm Ups C and D."
Step 3:
Using Warm Ups A-D as raw material, write a two-stanza confession poem. Include parts from all four chunks. Squeeze two parts together and combine them into one stanza. Use "Confessions" as a working title.
