1. Based on the readings we've had, what would you identify as being the main features of indigenous peoples and their societies in California prior to Spanish exploration and colonization? Provide specific examples. Consider also how these features might have played into how indigenous people would be affected (i.e., prepared/unprepared; resistant/compliant, etc.) by the landing of the Spanish.

2. Since many of you plan to become teachers, let us consider a second question: If you were going to write a teaching unit on pre-colonial California, what would be the chief points you would want to get across to your students? Provide examples.

Answer all components of both questions. Be sure to cite your sources properly in your posting. For example, use (Starr, 22) as a parenthetical citation for a quote or summary of information on page 22 of the Starr textbook. Use (First Californians par. 3) for information or quotes from the website---provide the paragraph in which you found the information instead of the page number.
