Assignment - Media Project
Purpose - Psychology research routinely gets published in peer-reviewed journals and it is not uncommon for this research to be featured in the news. For this assignment, you will become acquainted with both types of works (i.e., peer-reviewed journal articles and news articles about research). You will demonstrate skills learned in lecture and seminar by identifying, summarizing, and critically comparing a research article and a news article about that particular research article. In this way, you will practice and demonstrate your ability to think and write critically about how media (in this case, a news article) represents psychological research.
Instructions & Requirements -
Part 1: News Media Featuring Psychological Research
First, identify an online news article written in the past 2 years covering a specific study within the field of psychology. You will get help with this in seminar #5.
- The precise focus is up to you but the news article you identify cannot be a general story on a psychological issue (e.g., a news story on anxiety or personality). It must be coverage of a specific research study.
- Some studies will be covered by more than one news outlet. If you notice this for your story, choose one of the news articles to focus on for this assignment.
Second, identify the specific research article that the news article is covering. Important note: Make sure it is a peer-reviewed article about a specific research study and that you can access the full article. If not, you will need to go back and find another news article with a corresponding research article that does meet these criteria. Again, you will get help with this in seminar #5, and you will learn how to find peer review articles in lecture #5.
- NOTE: You will want to make sure to get this step correct before moving on, otherwise you will find yourself unable to successfully complete this assignment and will have to come back and redo the first and second steps.
- Once identified, you can set the research article aside for now (you may want to download and save it). You will need it for parts 2 and 3 of this assignment.
Third, read your chosen news article carefully.
Finally, write a summary of the news article in your own words (you are not permitted to use quotes directly from the article). You must address all of the following in your summary:
- The research question(s) being addressed; in other words, what does the news article say was the goal of the research study being reported on?
- The general methodology used by the researchers, as reported in the news article. If this was not reported in the news article, clearly state this. If this was reported but unclear, indicate what makes it unclear.
- The main research finding(s) reported in the news article.
- The limitations of the study reported in the news article. If none were reported in the news article, clearly state this.
- The major implications of the study's findings, as reported in the news article (i.e., what do the findings mean in the real world?). If none were reported in the news article, clearly state this.
Important notes: For this summary, you should focus only on content from the news article (not the research article). In part 2 you will summarize the research article and you will need both separate summaries (and the original articles) to compare in part 3. Part 1 of this assignment should be no more than 1 page double-spaced.
Part 2: Psychological Research Featured in News Media
First, go back to the specific peer-reviewed research article that your news article was about and that you should have already identified and accessed in part 1.
Second, read the research article carefully and make sure you have a good understanding of its contents.
Finally, write a summary of the research article in your own words (you are not permitted to use quotes directly from the article). You must address all of the following in your summary:
- The research question(s) being addressed in the study. If they are not clearly stated, indicate what makes them unclear.
- The general methodology used by the researchers (e.g., Who were the participants? What was the procedure? What materials were used?).
- The main research finding(s) reported by the researchers.
- The main limitations of the study reported by the researchers (studies typically list major limitations in the discussion to help put findings into context, to guide future research, and to avoid readers misinterpreting what the findings mean).
- The major implications of the study's findings (i.e., what do the findings mean in the real world?).
Important note: For this summary, you should focus only on content from the research article (do not refer to or mention the news article). You will need both separate summaries (and the original articles) to compare in part 3. Part 2 of this assignment should be no more than 1 page double-spaced.
Part 3: Critical Comparison between Research and News Articles
Now that you have read and summarized two different ways that psychological information can be presented (i.e., news articles and primary research articles), write a short paper that critically compares the two. The paper must include the following:
Comparison of news article and research article: Address the major similarities and differences between the news article and the research article.
- The number and type of similarities and differences will vary across students because some news articles will do a better job reporting on the research article than others.
- As you consider what is similar and different between the news article and the research article, you must address the following: the study's major aim(s), methods, major findings, major limitations, and implications. When discussing any similarities and differences, you must do more than just list them. Specifically, comment on how they are similar or different.
Informed commentary on quality of reporting: Provide an informed commentary on the quality of reporting in the news article with respect to the research article it covered. That is, informed by what you wrote above, you should critically comment on and evaluate how well and accurately the news article reported on and portrayed the study in the research article.
- It is essential that you substantiate any claims you make (i.e., if you make a claim, the reader should see how/why you are making this claim).
- You must also address how the news article could potentially impact the general public (i.e., those who would read the news article but not the actual research article). For instance, could what readers read in the news article impact their knowledge, attitudes, feelings, behavior, etc.? What you write here will largely depend on the nature of the research being covered and the quality of reporting in the news article; that is, the impact on the general public might be potentially positive, negative, or perhaps even both.
Part 3 of this assignment should be no more than 2 pages double-spaced.
