Undertaking a motivational interview as part of a health promotion intervention

Aim(s) of Event: To provide students with an opportunity to develop motivational interviewing techniques in supporting a patient to make a behaviour change.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the session students will

  • Have an understanding of the techniques of motivational interviewing and why this is an effective technique in guiding behaviour change.
  • Be able to initiate a conversation with a client around health care and lifestyle issues and practise techniques used in health care to support behaviour change.
  • Develop observational skills by observing peers and providing peer to peer feedback.

Pre-simulation preparation -

Prior to attendance at the simulation practical students must complete ALL these pre-session activities.

Read the RCN web based information about motivational interviewing and behaviour change.

Watch the video via the link provided on BB: Motivational Interviewing: initial consultation in smoking cessation.

Review:-

  • Your session materials on effective communication undertaken in Nursing 1
  • The methods used in smoking cessation from the Marcus 1 simulation session.
  • The model of health promotion you chose to look at in your Nursing 2 Health Promotion Report.

Write a summary of the key points from the RCN information about motivational interviewing- outline the 5 key skills.
