Part 1

Identify an industry in which you are interested in someday working and create a name for a fictitious company. If you haven't thought about a preferred industry, take the time to research several options to identify one that best meets your preferences for growth, financial performance, ethics, environmental sustainability, etc. Choosing an industry is as important as choosing an employer and a specific job - it influences how much flexibility you have (for example, some industries are more regulated than others), your promotion opportunities (faster growing industries provide greater opportunity for advancement), and your compensations (industries with higher profit margins can afford to pay employees more than industries without high profits.

The first task is to read as much as you can about the industry, its top performing companies, its growth outlook, and the current challenges and opportunities to be able to make decisions in setting up a human resource management function for your company. Describe what your company's business strategy, competitive advantage, and talent philosophy will be - how will you position yourself to successfully compete in this industry? You can make your firm any size and locate it anywhere you would like but be consistent throughout the project.

Part 2

In the last chapter, you identified a company and industry to use for this project. You described the business strategy, competitive advantage, and talent philosophy. The assignment for this Part is to formalize your firm's company position on social responsibility and corporate philanthropy. You must also devise a formal code of ethics which employees will sign as a condition of hire. To assist you, research other companies' ethical practices for insight as to how you want your firm to behave in the marketplace. Describe the culture you would create, explain why it is best suited to your firm, and explain how it will contribute to its success.

Part 3

Building on what you have done so far, identify how diversity and inclusion can help your organization execute its business strategy. Think about how different types of diversity can help you better create new products, attract, and serve a wider variety of customers, etc.

Write a statement explaining your company's approach to diversity and inclusion. Identify how you will use different HR policies, media, and technology to communicate and reinforce your approach with your employees. (the percent of new products introduced, the percentage of employees representing different groups...)

Part 4a

As drug and alcohol abuse is increasingly becoming a problem for American business, the next step you will take is to write a drug and alcohol policy for your company. This is important to do before you begin recruiting employees to work. You should think about what your firm will tolerate and do to help employees with substance abuse policies. You should also address legalizing marijuana and how you plan on handling that issue.

describe a policy on your firm's drug-free workplace procedures and how drug testing will be conducted. Additionally, write a paragraph explaining how your firm will address the above issues.

Part 4B

In an organization, occasionally an employee makes a mistake or error which can be detrimental to the business. Firms may choose to do corrective action to demonstrate to the employee the standard of the firm and to change his/her behavior.

For this assignment, find a situation where an employee might do something wrong. As an example, if your business is a brew pub, David may choose to overpour mixed drinks. As this has the potential to cause the business to lose money, AND create a liability with a DUI, how would you handle this situation?

Choose how you would apply corrective discipline in an action way. Select the step you would use (based on previous infractions), discuss what went wrong, what is your company standard, and when and how often will you follow up. Be sure to include a signature line for the employee and manager, as well as the disclaimer: "I have read and understand this counseling memo."

Part 5

Think about a job that is critical for your chosen organization's success. Do a mini competency analysis on the position, considering the company's business strategy and competitive advantage. Do some online research to learn how similar companies are presenting their job opportunities in this area. explain a job analysis that would be likely to attract a job seeker who would be a great fit with that position.

Part 6

Using the same job you analyzed in the previous chapter, develop a sourcing and recruiting strategy to locate and attract high potential applicants. Identify three recruiting sources you feel would be effective and explain your reasoning. Create a job posting which could appear on your web site under the "Careers" section that would interest high potential recruits to apply for the position. Make certain the ad is interesting and visually appealing.

Part 7

Develop 10 performance-based questions you would ask on the interview for this position. Remember, these questions are open-ended as you are trying to obtain as much information as possible from the candidates. Assuming you interview three final candidates for the position, how would you choose to hire your future employee? explain a job offer letter to your chosen candidate that presents a valid job offer, reinforces your employer brand, and tries to persuade the finalist to accept your offer.

Part 8

Describe the onboarding and socialization experience you would create for your new hires. What will you do the first day? Second day? Second week? One month later? 6 months? Be sure to explain your choices. Additionally, identify three learning objectives for your new hire training program to help new hires contribute to business strategy execution.

Part 9

Using the same job you choose for the previous chapters, describe the performance management system you would establish to best align the goals of employees in that position with organizational goals and values. Additionally, create a performance appraisal form for the job and explain why your choice is most appropriate given the goals of the evaluation.

Part 10

Using the same job, describe the employee benefits package you would offer for this position. Make certain to explain your objectives for your employee benefits and why your recommendations are likely to be effective in meeting these objectives. Will the benefits be the same for everyone or will employees be able to choose some of their benefits? Don't forget to consider the cost of the benefits in your decision making. Make certain you are offering at least 10 different benefits
