Term Paper instructions
You need to write a short paper 4 pages showing your knowledge in econometrics. Take this opportunity not only to show your strength in econometric tools, but also your skills as a writer and your overall knowledge in your field of study. For your guidance, I posted a sample paper on the class Blackboard website. This sample paper shows you the structure you should follow and gives you a number of suggestions on how to write the paper. For your paper you can obtain your own data or select one of the data sets posted in the class Blackboard website. Just make sure you use procedures covered class, including the last few chapters. The data sets posted on the class website are available in MS Excel and the variables are described in the corresponding .txt file. If you choose to use one of these datasets, go over the .txt files to understand what the dataset is about. Before you can actually import the MS Excel file into Gretl you need to modify it and save it in your computer. The key modification involves including the names of the variables on the first row, so actually Gretl imports the file with knowledge about the names of the variables.
Term Paper Proposal: Analyzing Campus Security and Crime Rates in Relation to Enrollment and College Type
This study explores how campus security measures, specifically the presence of police officers, impact crime rates on college campuses. The study analyzes data from 97 colleges in the CAMPUS.DES dataset, examining variables such as total enrollment, public or private status, number of employed officers, and reported campus crimes. Initial statistics indicate that crime rates differ depending on a college's enrollment size and security measures. Preliminary scatter plots suggest possible nonlinear correlations between the logarithmically transformed variables (lcrime, lenroll, lpolice).
This study aims to examine the impact of student body size and institutional type (private vs. public) on campus crime rates, and to assess whether increased police presence can curb these crimes. Regression analysis will be used to explore these relationships, with a particular focus on the possible diminishing returns of higher police presence on larger campuses. The findings from this study can provide valuable insights to educational institutions for improving campus safety.
