Problem: Record of a Tenement Gentleman
Write a screenplay or "novelization" adapting a scene from the movie "Record of a Tenement Gentleman / Nagaya shinshiroku (1947, Yasujiro Ozu)" to a different genre. Genres may include but are not limited to: Adventure, Detective, Courtroom Drama, Docudrama, Espionage, Fantasy, Horror, Medical Drama, Musical, Police Procedural, Science Fiction, Soap Opera, Thriller, Western, Comedy, Romantic Comedy, Documentary, Mockumentary, Slapstick, Educational, Instructional, News, Religious, Reality, Stand Up, Talk Show, Variety, Cooking Show...
If you write a screenplay, make sure to include details about mise-en-scène and cinematography: setting, lighting, camera movement, music, etc. If you write a novelization, make sure to evoke atmosphere and mood through descriptive passages or writing style. For both, think about the specific scene: where does it begin and why? where does it end and why? You do not need to follow the film's original sequencing or editing, but it must be clear what parts of the original film you're referencing.
The genre adaptation portion of this paper must be between 1,000-1,250 words in double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font with 1-inch margins. Additionally, after the end of your screenplay/novelization, write a short essay (250-300 words) explaining your artistic choices. What effects were you trying to produce? The total word count must be between 1,250 and 1,500 words.
Task

Question 2. Does your adaptation share the same critical interests as the source? (Is it recognizably the same text?)

Question 4. Did you proofread for spelling, grammar, "presentation," etc.?
