The final paper must be a minimum of 5 full pages in length (not including the work cited). For this paper you will need to pick one of the overarching themes in the class and write a researched paper. You will need to use a minimum of 3 outside sources to write the paper. The paper must follow the general guidelines that are laid out in the following paragraphs. You will have an opportunity to earn points towards the final paper grade through various turn-ins throughout the term.
General Paper Requirements:
A). Outside sources:
Outside sources are books, journal articles, or essays (published within journals or books). Websites, essays and/or articles pulled from the web are not legitimate sources for these papers, as we cannot verify the source of this information. If you need help in getting sources for the papers please contact me in advance.
B). Format and presentation:
All papers are to be written in TIMES NEW ROMAN - 12 point font, double-spaced, 1 inch margins all around (top, bottom and sides. All papers must include a WORKS CITED page; this page is not included in the page count for the paper. MLA citation must be used throughout the paper. If you are unfamiliar with the rules of MLA please see me for a MLA guide sheet. You can also seek help on this at the writing center.
C). Content:
All papers must contain a clearly stated thesis. This must be found in the first few paragraphs of the paper. Your thesis paragraph must give the reader a sense of the idea that you will argue and which position you are taking on this idea, i.e. for or against the ethical theory, pro or con an issue. All paragraphs will follow a logical flow in support of your thesis. Your papers must contain both an introductory and concluding paragraph. Philosophy papers are papers not simply of opinion but ideas supported by tangible content. Use your sources to back up your position. Do not make a statement of belief and then leave it hanging out there without proper support. Make your statement of belief and then back it up by relevant evidence in favor of that belief that you have obtained from your research.
