Part 1: Group Presentation (required for all students aiming to pass the course with an A, B, or C)
Each group will select a work of literature we did not study this semester and argue for why it should be included on a future version of the course. Your selection should fit into one of the units on our syllabus:
• Unit 1- Retelling the Past
"Nothing comes from nothing" (quote from Haroun)
• Unit 2- Telling (and Retelling) the Future
"Because survival is insufficient" (quote from Station Eleven)
• Unit 3- Adaptation and Appropriation
"Give me back my flag" (quote from "Appropriation of Cultures")
Creativity is encouraged! Your group must present a work of literature, but you might also explore how that literary text is adapted in a variety of genres (film, television, video game adaptations, etc.). Here are the requirements for the presentation:
Groups of 3-4 total members will be organized in class on Wednesday, Nov. 9. If you are absent that day, please contact me via email within 24 hours so I can place you in a group.
Presentations should last approximately 10-12 minutes and should include some visuals (e.g., PowerPoint), with a final slide citing any sources you consulted. Each group member should present some portion of the material. Presentations are not required to follow a set structure, but at minimum, they should (1) introduce a new text that fits into one of the 3 units we've studied, (2) provide reasons for why we should study it, and (3) analyzes at least one example from the text to illustrate its value/relevance.
Part 2: Individual Written Reflection
Students aiming for an A or B in the course will write a reflection that weaves their chosen text together with some of the literary works we have already studied. The 2 goals of your reflection are
1. to make connections among some of your favorite texts from the semester
2. to reflect on how these texts have helped you see something new-in your life, in your other classes, in the world
If you are working towards an A
• Content Guideline: Please discuss a text from each unit (3 total), plus the new one you have pitched in your presentation.
• Length range: 900-1500 words (approx. 3-5 pages).
If you are working towards a B
• Content Guideline: Please discuss at least 2 texts we have read, from different units, plus the new one you have pitched in your presentation.
• Length range: 600-1200 words (approx. 2-4 pages).
I invite you to write in any format you wish. You are welcome to write a traditional reflection paper, but you can write in another style if you prefer-a monologue, a story, a dramatic scene between characters from the different texts, a series of poems, diary entries from the perspective of your favorite characters/authors, a tweet thread... whatever feels like the best medium for your ideas.
