Preliminary stages of the Big Idea Curriculum Development document
You must: Complete 4 anecdotal observations and reflections of videatives of children at play. You will observe and listen to the pervasive interest expressed. What are they playing about? This is not about a toy or a curriculum area, but the dramatization in play scenarios. In the first example, children call the place in the town the "square", not the geometric shape, but where people gather, although some about the shape as this relates is part of what we are hearing. Events happen when people gather.
• Identify the "Big Idea" from the observations
• Write a rationale for the "Big Idea" explaining why you chose that big idea for the specific children in the group. This must be 3-5 sentences long.
• Create a hand drawn web to document your big idea.
o This web must be completed on a large poster board or flip chart paper, which is to be presented on your display/documentation board.
o It must contain at least 6 initial concepts, (what children will learn about the topic as they play) and several sub-concepts that relate to the big idea, as well as at least 20 process oriented play experience ideas (activities) based upon the big idea. You must identify the curriculum area of each idea. These will be differentiated in some way, such as by using colour for the legend of your webbing.
o This web may be hand written and submitted through photos. Be sure that your writing is legible and that the photos are clear enough to be able to read all content. You may need to take several photos of the web in sections as well as one photo of the entire web.
