Paper requirement:
Designing Media Project: You will write a proposal for a design of a new technological system, or new application of an old system. The proposal will describe the system, and the reason for the system (i.e. what need does it fill in the world?). YOU WILL NOT ACTUALLY DESIGN THE SYSTEM.
Paper- You will write a 6-page double spaced (not counting references) study proposal using an outline provided in section. You will include sources from class as well as 5-8 sources from your own literature review. The format of the essay should be Times new roman and 12. Of these sources, only two can be websites (for example, huffingtonpost.com and npr.org). Citations should be in APA style. Late papers will be accepted at the prerogative of the TA and WILL receive a point deduction. Due by start of section on 11/21st or 11/22.
Paper outline: Note: References and Appendices are in addition to the body of the paper and do not count towards the 6 pages.
You paper should very clearly answer the following questions: What is this project about? What question does it answer or what problem does it solve? How is it based on theory and/or previous research? What other work has been done in this area? How does your project build on that previous work AND contribute something new?
Introductory Paragraph (.5 page)
In 3-5 sentences summarize the entire paper. I should state 1) the "problem" you're trying to address and why it matters? 2.) what has been done to address this problem to-date? 3) What system would you design to solve this problem or address this need?
The Problem (2 pages)
You should use research collected in your literature review to motivate your problem. Why do we care about this as a society? What are the consequences of having this issue go unaddressed? What do we as a society or individuals gain by addressing this problem (e.g. Does someone make money? Are lives improved? How?)
Solutions To-Date (1.5)
You should use research collected in your literature review to demonstrate what people have done so far, either using technology or without technology, to try to solve this problem. You will be evaluating the effectiveness of these solutions and articulating what they lack.
Your Digital System (1.5 pages)
What is the system you are proposing? How does it work? How does it improve upon previous solutions to-date? Why would people want to buy it/use it?
Conclusion (0.5 page)
Summarize your proposal. Re-state the introduction in different words.
