The Environment in the News
The environment is in the news on a daily basis in some form or another. It may be related to natural disasters, drought, rain, flood, pollution, oil spill, smog, energy efficiency, nuclear power, endangered species, plagues of locusts, global warming, political issues involving regulations of the environment and companies? dealings with the environment, and many more. Your assignment is to write a five (5) paragraph essay describing your view of the contents of a news article on science in the environment that you find on either MSNBC or CNN or Science Channel from the past 6 months. Tie the topic of your article to a topic (indicate the topic and page number in your paper) covered in the textbook and discuss how the article either illustrates, contrasts, applies, elaborates, or contradicts the material covered in the text. Copy the contents of the article to a separate Word document and include the URL link to the article in the reference, make sure to include the date the article was initially written. If you can not find a date on the article you found, choose a different article that you can find a date for to ensure it is within the past 6 months.
Writing and Turning in the Paper
Write a five paragraph essay (Intro paragraph, three supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph - "tell „em what you are going to tell „em, tell, and tell „em what you told „em") about your "take" on the issue being reported in the article you read. You will identify the article at the end of your paper, and so this should not be a paraphrase or report of what?s in the article. Instead, write what you think about it, how you think it relates to this course, and what you have learned. If you feel a need to do so, you may quote your article, but no more than two times, and none of the quotes may be longer than three lines of text.
