Prepare for an international assignment. Many expatriates return from an assignment before the assignment is completed. Failure to complete their assignments can cost a company extraordinary expenses. It is very expensive to send employees on international assignments. The costs range from $500,000 to $3 million to send an employee to work outside of the country.
This assignment requires:
- Knowledge of the set of shared values and beliefs that affect the perceptions, decisions and behaviors of the people from a particular country (national culture)
- Knowledge of Hofstede's cultural dimensions (Chapter 3 Section 3.8)
To start this assignment, you need to assume that you are a top-level manager preparing to live and work outside the United States. You will be gone for one year; you choose the country. Peru and India are not available because of the student sample (available at the content section of D2L).
Instructions - Research and write a business report (minimum of four pages- this does not include your citation page) describing the cultural differences between your country of interest and the United States. You must describe the national cultural differences in your business report. In your report, you also need to explain criteria 1 through 8 on business etiquette. Please remember, this is a business report requiring complete sentences and proper business professionalism and business terminology.
STEP 1: Cultural Dimensions
1. Go to Hofstede Insights - COMPARE COUNTRIES website.
2. Find the cultural dimensions for your country of interest and the United States.
3. In your written report, you must compare the US dimensions to the country you will be an expatriate. This section of your report must include Geert Hofstede's dimensions.
STEP 2: Continue your research to find and identify the proper business etiquette for the country you will live and conduct business in.
Business Etiquette
1. Proper use of your business card
2. The acceptable greeting and accompanying body language
3. Dress code
4. Country's concept of time
5. Proper dining manners
6. Gift giving protocol
7. Religion and political taboos
8. Other interesting information.
