Problem
Paper
Consider an intercultural conflict you have experienced. The conflict could be interpersonal, intergroup OR international/global (see the textbook for an example of each context). Write paper (750 to 1000 words) analyzing the conflict using the 3 frames (micro, meso, AND macro) (see the textbook for examples of analysis using all three frames). Steps to do this:
1) Write a brief description (1-2 paragraphs) of the conflict.
2) Analyze the conflict based on the ideas and concepts in chapter 9 of Sorrells. Specifically, identify the micro, meso and macro-level dimensions/frames of the conflict.
3) Answer based on your understanding of intercultural communication, what suggestions can you offer to resolve the conflict? When thinking about solutions be sure to refer to the solutions offered in the text; however you are also welcome to offer an alternative solution and state why it's better (more appropriate) to solve this particular conflict.
After reading the chapter to provide a comprehensive analysis, some of these some of these terms MUST be included in the response:
The micro-frame: draws attention to cultural orientations to conflict, communication (high/low context), and conflict styles, as well as different facework strategies. Additionally, note how situational factors may play an important role along with cultural norms in determining individuals' choices and actions in conflict management.
The meso-frame highlights the role that group-based prejudices, cultural histories, and identities, as well as imbalances in power, have on intercultural conflict. Influences on conflict revealed through the meso-frame are undoubtedly interconnected to and impacted by issues made evident through the macro-frame.
The macro-frame draws our attention to how intercultural conflicts are shaped by media representation, economic factors, and asymmetries in geopolitical power. Intercultural conflicts in the context of globalization are complex, often deeply rooted in history and situated within inequitable relationships of power.
