Rhhhhhetoric! What is Sequence Three?
Building on Sequence One, which asked you to develop and reflect on your relationship to language, and Sequence Two-which asked you to develop and reflect on your relationship to language through another's perspective-Sequence Three asks you to consider how language and writing function within a larger social audience. Therefore, in this Sequence you will be asked to write on a current political/ social awareness campaign that you feel passionately about. The goal of this assignment is to persuade your audience with an effective use of evidence and appeals to rhetoric: ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos. Your argument should include a subject (the social awareness campaign), a position (what you're arguing about said campaign i.e. effective/ineffective in ) and a prediction (how you're going to support your position).
Guiding Questions:
What political conversations are you interested in joining?
What rights do you believe-or don't believe-should be afforded to certain identity groups? What social movements do you support?
What current issues get you fired up? Is there a specific political topic that you are dying to write about? What are the opposing views to your political interests, and how do those opposing views appeal to rhetoric?
Where are my sources coming from? Are they credible?
What am I contributing to the conversation about this awareness campaign?
Important Aspects to Consider:
Similar to Sequence One and Two, choosing a focus/angle will be essential for writing a concise and persuasive Sequence Three project; therefore, as you pre-write and research various topics, consider how you are going to make connections to "global" concerns, while remaining "localized" and specific to the campaign you have chosen. In other words, you cannot and should not, expect to write about everything and everyone in a 4-6 page paper, and that is okay-find a focus and stick to itl
