This course examines the evolution of modern political systems in the Middle East since the end of World War I until the so called Arab Spring. It compares the various sources of legitimacy on which these systems are based and the types of institutions used to control and/or to discipline the societies of the Middle East. The course also investigates the relationship between state and civil society in a number of Middle Eastern countries highlighting the role of various types of social movements and opposition groups in initiating political reforms and the limitations of the latter.
-Paper: The final paper (8-10 pages) should address a research question. In other words, the paper has to be analytical not only descriptive. Students need to make arguments supported by evidence not just personal statements. Students are allowed to use only academic sources (books and journal articles). They should consult at least 7 academic sources in writing the final paper.
