The NCCoE releases cybersecurity practical guidance in the form of a NIST Special Publication. Any organization can utilize the "practice guide" to increase their cyber security posture. Practice guides are publicly available and free, making it difficult to understand who is making use of practice guides. NCCoE would like to understand the influence Practice Guides are having on private sectors. One method is to discover where links and discussions about practice guide concepts occur on the internet, including social media. Web crawlers can scour parts of the internet based on a defined input, to collect data. This capstone will collect data and build an algorithm to better understand NCCoE influence.

1. Use an existing or build a web crawler that will discover hits on a list of regex terms relative to NCCoE and its practice guides.

a. Input a starting URL, list of words and number of pages to download

b. Respect all robots.txt rules

c. Determine which websites, blogs, forums, knowledgebases to crawl

2. Based on collected data build an algorithm that will score or create a relative ranking to prove NCCoE is having an influence

3. Use social media APIs to collect similar data from social media platforms

a. Determine which platforms allow this

b. Respect privacy and data collection rules relevant to each platform

c. Use the same algorithm to determine influence on this data.
