Case Study Analysis
Subject - Readiness for Practice - The key purpose of this module is to prepare students for their 70-day practice placement in the first year of study. This module focuses on a range of core skills linked to those published under the Professional Capabilities Framework (British Association of Social Workers 2018), to include: reflective practice, communication, interviewing, problem solving, and developing personal resilience, challenging, identifying and managing risk. Additionally, the module will engage students with relevant models and theoretical approaches to Social Work practice, the ethics and values required for good practice and service user expectations. The module will invite students to consider what it is to be a Social Work professional and further challenge student to consider how the Social Work values and ethics promoted by BASW link to professional practice particularly when considering the authority entrusted to Social Work practitioners through statutory powers and duties.
Task
Write a critical reflection and analysis on the case scenario you have been allocated.
Case Scenario
David is a 32-year-old man who was referred to the Outreach Team. He was previously living with his boyfriend, but the relationship broke down and he was at risk of homelessness. David relied on his boyfriend to ensure the rent and bills were paid on time. David was diagnosed with schizophrenia and had problems with substance misuse. He has diabetes, which was not under control, had HIV and Hepatitis B. David is a talented guitar player and loves to play/listen to rock music.
David's substance misuse and health problems were the factors that put him most at risk. He had to leave his boyfriend's home and was rehoused by the Borough Council in a flat managed by a housing association. David is having problems with his tenancy and he is not paying his rent. The Housing Association has sent a letter to advise he is at risk of eviction if the rent is not paid within the next month. If David is evicted this will impact significantly on his physical and mental health and wellbeing.
David has had social work input in the past in relation to his mental health. David wanted support to access the community, support to attend his health appointments (diabetes clinic, sexual health clinic, substance abuse and Psychiatry) and support to engage in employment. David had several social workers in a 6-month period. David felt that they did not help him address the issues he was experiencing or help him achieve his desired goal.
