Assignment: Responding to the ITC
The objective of this assignment effectively is for you to write a comment letter to the GASB in response to the Invitation to Comment. Although you will not really be submitting this to the GASB, you should prepare it as if you were going to send it in. In other words, it should be written professionally and organized like a business letter.
That means you should begin by reading the instructions for written comments on page i-ii and the Notice to Recipients on page v.
Your comment letter will not address the entire ITC. To make this assignment manageable, you will be answering questions 2.1 and 3.1.
Required Contents: 1. Opening-Following the top matter for a business letter (date, address as provided in the ITC, and salutation), the letter should begin with an opening paragraph that states who you are or who you represent, explains why you are writing, and sets the tone for your response to the ITC. For some examples of what this opening might be like, take a look at some of the comment letters on the 2017 ITC on the Financial Reporting Model. Letters 5, 10, and 11 have particularly good openings.
2. Answers to questions 2.1 and 3.1-Each answer should be presented separately and clearly identified with a heading that repeats the specific question.
3. Conclusion-A brief wrap-up of the letter and a signature line.
Format: As with the prior assignments, this letter should be at least three pages and no more than six pages (double-spaced), using 12-point font size and 1-inch margins on all sides.
