Goals:
- To learn the skill of writing an effective memo to a superior which provides specifically requested information.
- To reinforce the selection and manipulation of templates; to add or change design elements of a template.
- To sharpen the critical thinking and writing skills of analysis and evaluation by critiquing an advertisement.
Assignment:
Write a business memorandum to your supervisor [i.e. your instructor] analyzing a print advertisement.
A memo letter is a type of business letter used mostly for internal communication within a company, organization, or school. A memorandum may be used to make a request, announce an upcoming meeting, or communicate some important facts.
Find an advertisement for a product or service. You must include the ad in your submission. You must explain in the memo where this ad is found, and briefly describe it.
For this assignment, assume you are an employee in the Marketing Department of the company for this product or service. Your immediate supervisor, the Vice President of Marketing, has asked you to analyze the ad, and then give a final recommendation about the ad and whether to keep running it or not.
I will give you a standard format or template.
This template will require the following three items:
- An analysis of the ad is similar to what we did with the Barthes reading.
- An analysis of the audience of the advertisement.
- An analysis of ethos, pathos, and logos within the ad.
Requirements:
- Choose a print advertisement, not a video advertisement.
- The memo should be less than two pages but make sure to include all sections stated on the template. Use this template as a guide. Business writing is usually succinct and to the point. The first paragraph states the purpose of the memo; the last paragraph is your recommendation. Other paragraphs should describe and analyze the ad.
- You will be graded on the quality of the writing, the sharpness of your analysis and critique, and the professionalism of your memo design.
- You should consult the textbook, online sources, and the instructor for how to write an effective analysis.
