Write a briefing paper on strategies for promoting democracy and human rights in Saudi Arabia over the next 5-10 years.
You must write this briefing paper from the perspective of the United States or Amnesty International. In effect you are playing the role of a senior ministerial advisor or lobbyist (respectively) to the US government and providing them with policy recommendations that they will attempt to pursue. You will need to research what the US government's current position is in terms of objectives and preferences and base your future strategy around those, as well as acknowledging what obstacles may occur. You should also be aware of recent policy announcements in the KSA, particularly since the accession of King Salman.
Whilst there is no upper limit to the number of ideas you may propose you must present at least three options. These may cover different areas (e.g. one economic strategy, one educational, one diplomatic) or be variations on the same theme (e.g. three different diplomatic strategies).
You will need to support your recommendations with scholarly evidence as to their merit.
A traditional essay style is not required for this assignment, though you must still provide evidence for your arguments and you should present your briefing paper in an appropriately formal style. There is no specific format for a briefing paper. You may use sections, sub-headings and bullet points. You may even use graphical objects such as charts and graphs. However, be sparing with these, because ultimately we want you to produce a piece of persuasive writing, not a monthly sales report. The tone of the briefing paper should be formal. Remember, this briefing paper may end up before your Head of State!
