Assignment:

Write a brief commencement speech (about 250 to 300 words) that you could deliver to a group of Miami Dade College graduates who all plan to study business at FIU (or at another four-year research university). What insights and advice and encouragement can you offer? Develop your own message and your own voice. Consider the three assigned speeches (attached to the module late in the course) and watch and/or read additional commencement speeches that you admire. Approach your "speech" as you would an essay. That is, write your speech in paragraphs.

However, because it's intended to be "delivered," write in short paragraphs. Think of them as long bullet points. As you revise, read it aloud. Listen to your words. Imagine yourself actually delivering the speech at a podium to an audience of graduates and their families. Consider where you might pause. Consider the points that might be humorous--and those that might be quite serious and thought-provoking. Write it from your perspective as a person who will soon graduate from FIU with a bachelor's degree in business. In terms of your education and your work experience, you are likely more knowledgeable and "worldly" than your audience, so speak from a position of someone who has earned the right to stand up and deliver such a message. Teach them something and inspire them.
