How do you think their gender and/or societal gender norms influenced how their depressive symptoms presented? For example: Did you or your friend cry often and easily? Were day-to-day activities such as sleeping and eating disturbed? Did you or he/she tell friends about being depressed? How did he/she try to cope with their mental state? Did they try to drown the sorrow with alcohol or drugs, visit a mental health professional, or call a helpline?
When thinking about how their symptoms manifested, examine the influence and evidence of gender-role stereotypes. Are any of these behaviors more typically associated with women than men, or vice versa? What does this tell you about what depression might "look like'' in men versus women?
If a friend confided in you about feeling depressed, would you react differently or give different advice based on that friend's gender?
