Problem: Hire or Not? You are the male owner of a small company that installs printer cable and services printers at automotive dealerships. With the exception of receptionists and billing clerks, very few women work at the stores that buy your parts and services. In this male-dominated atmosphere, females are treated as second-class citizens, and sexist humor is common . Your former service person, Mike, was quite at home in this environment. He kept his clients entertained with a constant stream of dirty jokes and was accepted as "one of the guys." Mike has given notice that he is going to quit, and you're searching for a replacement. The job market is tight for cable installers, and you can't match the salaries paid by larger firms in the area. After a monthlong search, you finally locate an enthusiastic applicant. Sue, a recent college graduate, has limited expe¬rience but appears to be a "go -getter " who mixes well with all types of people. Most importantly, she holds a Class C low voltage license that qualifies her to do all types of installation and maintenance work. You worry about hiring a young woman for this particular job. Not only do you wonder if she will be as successful as Mike, but you fear that she may be the target of sexist humor. Sue doesn't seem to be easily offended, but you wonder if you could be sued later if she claims sexual discrimination. After all, you would be sending her into a potentially hostile working environment. Would you hire Sue for this position? Why or why not?
