In August 2013, the state of California enacted a law that gives transgender public school students in the Golden State the right to choose which school bathrooms they wish to use. The bill also allows transgender students who wish to participate in athletics the right to decide if they wish to participate on the boys' or girls' teams.

In 2023, about half the states-typically, those with Democratic state leadership-have some similar regulations that apply to transgender students.

Not surprisingly, this law is controversial. Opponents claim that the law amounts to letting boys go into the girls' locker room and showers.

Supporters claim that the law allows young people to express their sexuality authentically.
