Shown in the diagram is a cross-section through the body and legs of a cricket (an insect). The diagram shows a different mechanism for localizing sound than the ones we discussed in class. In the cricket, the tympanic membranes are located on the surface of opposite legs, and the internal tracheal tubes are fused, making the auditory canal a single, continuous cavity that spans the width of the body; this mechanism of sound localization is called "pressure differential detection".
