Assignment:

Albinism is inherited as a recessive trait. It is a condition that causes reduced pigmentation in the skin, hair, and eyes due to a mutation in one of seven genes (OCA1 to OCA7).

1. Would such a mutation be a LOF (null or hypomorph) or GOF?

2. For several years, there was one albino bison in a herd down Mullan Ave. Based on this one bison, what could you predict about the number of OCA mutations in the herd, i.e., could this bison have one inherited OCA mutated allele while the second OCA mutated allele would be a spontaneous mutation or an inherited mutation.

3. Now, 2024, there are two albino bison in this herd, does this information change your answer for number 2?

4. Calculate the probability of an albino offspring from two parents that are heterozygous for the OCA mutated allele.

5. Calculate the probability of an albino offspring from one albino parent and one parent that is heterozygous for the OCA mutated allele.
