Assignment:
Nyerere and Communitarianism
Case 1: Wanda was a shift manager at McDonalds for fifteen years until she fell and injured her back at home. She received 12 weeks unpaid leave but wasn't able to return to work afterward because she still couldn't stand for long periods of time and pain would strike unpredictably. She applied for Social Security Disability benefits from the government and was accepted; but that monthly check barely covers her bills, and she is completely unable to save to help her son pay for trade school tuition after he graduates high school. Her home has slowly been falling into disrepair and she is growing more and more anxious and depressed about her future.
Question 1: What might Nyerere say about the society Wanda lives in and what needs to be changed about it? Answer this question by:
(1) Giving and explaining any needed terms or concepts, and
(2) Using details from the case to explain the answer.
Case 2: Martin owns several old duplexes and rents them out to low- to moderate-income renters. His income is entirely from his tenants' monthly checks; he does some maintenance work, but only does enough to keep the homes functional and does not upgrade anything unless things are dire. Once the Coronavirus pandemic hit, many of Martin's tenants lost their jobs and could not pay rent. They decided to band together and refuse to pay rent for the month of April. Martin is very worried about his ability to pay his own bills this month as a result, and is seeking out whether he can take any legal action against his tenants.
Question 2: Would Nyerere side with Martin or with the tenants? Why and how so? Answer this question by:
(1) Giving and explaining any needed terms or concepts, and
(2) Using details from the case to explain the answer.
