Knowing that dapsone can induce methemoglobinemia, the attending physician orders a blood test that demonstrates an elevated methemoglobin (MetHgb} level. Concerned that further increases in MetHgb could provoke angina, the attending physician calls the poison center to see if there is anything that could be done to prevent further elevation of the Met Hgb level. The Poison Center pharmacist recommends treating KP with cimetidine and oral activated charcoal. Why will cimetidine reduce methemoglobin formation?
2. DD is a 45 year-old female who reports an allergy to penicillin. She states that she had a skin rash when receiving the drug 10 years ago for a minor skin infection. Would it be safe to give this patient an oral challenge of penicillin? If yes, state why. If not, state why not.
