Alain C. is a 36-year-old resident of Seulville, where he lives with his wife and two school-age children. He is a respectable member of his community, active in several civic organizations. Alain is employed by the ABC company in Seulville, where he has worked for several years and is a very appreciated employee. However, when Alain tried to change jobs a few years ago, he failed. He strongly suspects it might be due to an online document about an incident in his past, which pops up every time someone searches his name: a newspaper article describing the arrest of Alain C. when he was in Cégep . Alain had pleaded guilty to this charge and received a reduced sentence of 30 hours of work service in his community; the judge presiding over the case advised Alain that since this was his first offence, the conviction would not be permanently placed on his record. Thus, Alain believed that the incident was behind him and that he would not have to worry about any official public record affecting his future. Since this arrest, Alain has not violated any law. Yet Alain continues to be haunted by the unfortunate incident from his past due to the newspaper article still available online about his arrest. As a result, Alain feels that his job prospects are not very promising. In fact, over the past few years, Alain has been turned down by a number of potential employers who initially seemed very interested in hiring him. Unable to change jobs and feeling left out of potential career opportunities, Alain concludes that he will be stuck in his current position as long as information about his arrest continues to surface online. Alain therefore decides to contact Google and other major search engine companies to request that this article be deleted.
