A pair of identical twins both show worrying signs of developing retinoblastoma (eye cancer), often caused by mutations in the RB1 gene. RB1 stops progression through the cell cycle between G1 and S phase. You sequence RB1 from a retinal biopsy (sample of tissue from inside the eye) in both twins and discover that the gene is abnormally hypermethylated. Both twins are considering having children but are worried that the unusual hypermethylation you have diagnosed may be passed on to their kids. What can you tell them each about the likelihood this would happen and why?
