CASE: SAFETY IN THE GROCERY STORE
Sam manages the bakery department in a large chain grocery store/supermarket in Toronto, Ontario Canada. Sam oversees 40 employees working three shifts; the store is open 24 hours a day. Many employees are part-time, working 20 hours a week or less. Some are college and university students working their way through school. In the past year, Sam has noticed a marked increase in the number of safety-related incidents and accidents. There have been a lot of close calls where employees could have been hurt; just the other day, an employee slipped on a wet floor but was not injured. There has also been an increase in number of accidents, where employees sustained injuries warranting time away from work. Several employees have injured their backs lifting racks of bread into position, and product has been crushed by the careless use of a forklift. Recently, one employee was knocked to the floor when a stack of 15 trays of bread fell on him. Several employees have sustained burns when frying donuts and sustained cuts while using knives. Some employees reported their injuries; others didn't report their injuries for fear of termination. Employees have told Sam that they're being harassed. Sam has done nothing about this, hoping the problem will simply fix itself. Sam overheard sexist comments, racists comments and has even witnessed two employees getting into a physical fight; Sam told them to stop and resolve their problems outside of work. Senior executives realize Sam and the company need the help of HR professionals.
