Question

You are working in the patient financial services department and are responsible for resolving claims that have failed the initial scrub. The hospital's policy is to transmit to the payer daily 100% of all available claims. It has been challenging but possible to meet that goal until recently. You have noticed an increasing number of outpatient claims that are failing for physician NPI (national provider identification) number. You can see the physician's in the record and can look up their NPI. It usually takes a day to get the record corrected by going through patient access. You're not sure why it takes so long, since it only takes you a few minutes. There are more than usual today, so you decide to fix them and transmit the claims now. You will let patient access know tomorrow. Ethical or not?
