Question

Research is a huge component of many health care institutions today. Working in one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the world, I have watched regulations and requirements change drastically over the past 10 years. With the rapidly growing numbers of individuals coming into the US. and into the health care system, the challenges are constant. The entire process of consenting patients for treatment entails so much more when consideration for the language barriers come into play. Even with the use of interpreters and translators' researchers have great concern for what may get lost in translation. The cost of the various media (audio, video, and printed materials) and forms have to be made available to each individual/family in a language they understand. Governing agencies, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) really have their work cut out for them. The FDA has requirements governing informed consent and provide protection of the rights and welfare of human subjects involved in research activities that fall within FDA's jurisdiction (FDA, 1981). what can be learned from this statement?
