In the fourth part of "The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility," Walter Benjamin writes: "The stripping of the veil from the object, the destruction of the aura, is the signature of a perception whose 'sense for sameness in the world' has so increased that, by means of reproduction, it extracts sameness even from what is unique" (105). What does he mean by this? What exactly is "aura," and how, according to Benjamin, does technological reproducibility destroy it? How does he link this with the question of how the "mode of perception" (104) of human societies changes over time? Is there a way in which technologically reproducible artworks have their own aura?
