Explain the following
1. Black feminists had long argued for the need to address women's issues as part of the broader struggle for liberation. In the 1960s and 70s, black feminists and womanists formed groups like the NBFO (National Black Feminist Organization) to address misogyny, patriarchy, and hyper-masculinity in the black community. They met with resistance from men and women who believed that a woman's place was subservient to men or that addressing women's issues fractured/divided the black community.
2. That LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) black people were often ostracized and silenced in the black community. Some religious leaders maintained that their sexual orientation and gender identities were abominations. Many black leaders rejected their call for equal rights-including marriage rights-but some leaders and organizations like the NAACP have endorsed their struggle for equality.
3. "Black" immigrants from the Western Hemisphere and Africa arrived in United States and often affirmed their cultural distinction from "native" African Americans. Some rejected the identity of black or African American and forged their own identities. Many were more interested in class distinctions than racial ones that made little sense in the context of their birthplace.
