Case Study
Mrs Smith recently joined the distribution firm CP distribution as the Trade Marketing Manager. She had 1 Supervisor, 3 Team leads and a team of 50 merchandisers. She spent most of her time in office socializing with other Managers and very little time getting to know the Team. When she decided to go on the trade, she would see some outlets with issues that are not aligned with procedures and policies, without any discussions with Team members she immediately starts to threaten and in some cases issue punitive actions.
If someone tried to speak up in their defense, she would constantly interrupt them and remind them of her position.
The Team's demotivation and lack of enthusiasm to support the Company's goals and need for growth in sales was eroded which led to a dramatic decline in sales.
a. "With great power comes great responsibility" is a cliché used constantly.
i. Explain the two (2) types of leadership power being used by Mrs Smith and what is wrong with using these powers.
ii. Recommend the type of leadership power that she should have used and why.
b. Mangers and leaders are different even though people use the terms synonymously in discussions.
i. Explain the main difference between managers and leaders.
ii. With the aid of two (2) supporting examples from the case, state whether Mrs. Smith played the role of manager or leader.
iii. In the role identified in part (b ii) above, explain two (2) things she could have done differently and why.
