Although not mentioned in your textbook, Gen Winfield Scott was a "hero" of the American Civil War. He also hung out with his general buddies and former presidents in Long Branch, New Jersey during and after the war. In fact, a painting of him hangs in one of the Officer's Quarters on Sandy Hook. YET, he is the "villain" of the Trail of Tears. It is he who holds the Cherokee until winter to march them, and he who orchestrates the grabbing of kids so that the parents will have to follow. What do we tell our students about this historical figure?
