The Brand Wimpy was introduced to South Africa by English tea & coffee giant J. Lyons & Company. The founder of Wimpy was American Eddie Gold who opened the world's first Wimpy Bar in Chicago in the 20's. In 1977, Bakers bought 50%share in the business and by 1980 Wimpy was wholly owned by Bakers Limited. In July 1987, Wimpy and its subsidiaries were sold to Juicy Lucy SA Ltd and in 1988 Juicy Lucy SA Ltd changed its name to Pleasure Foods (Pty) Ltd. In March2003, Famous Brands, Wimpy's current holding company, acquired the Pleasure Foods (Pty) Ltd. In 2007 Famous Brands acquired 75% interest in "Wimpy UK" (171 stores). Concept Wimpy was first established in South Africa in 1967 - the firstrestaurant opening in Durban. Today we are recognised as leaders in the Casual Dining sector of the quick service restaurant industry having won numerous FASA and other media awards throughout the years. Today we boast over 500franchised restaurants, throughout Southern Africa, and a further 30 stores in Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Mauritius with plans for continued future ventures into other African countries. Beyond Southern Africa, Wimpy has representation inthe UK, having launched in London in 1954. We currently have 113 sites operating across the United Kingdom, in service areas, sports centres, Football Stadia and other Leisure venues Support A full bouquet of training and on-going operationalsupport is provided by the Franchisor.
