Assignment:
Creative Response: The Tempest by Shakespeare Adaptation Pitch
Common Directions: All summaries, paraphrases, and direct quotations should be documented correctly. Responses should be written in clear, precise prose. Zero points for undocumented use of outside sources.
Specific Guidelines for the Adaptation Pitch: For the adaptation pitch, you will be presenting a brief proposal for a new adaptation of the play. The pitch will argue why the audience should see/support your production; you will discuss some basic elements of adaptation -- plot, casting, setting, and language. When discussing casting choices, you may want to simply describe the type of actor who will be cast or you can cast a specific actor in the role. IMDB.com is a useful source for double checking the names of film actors and their previous work and for reviewing other adaptations of the work.
To complete the assignment, respond to the following questions. Use complete sentences and follow the rules of Standard American English grammar.
1.) Introduction: What makes your adaptation unique? Why should the audience see it? You may want to compare and contrast your version with others.
2.) Brief recap of the plot: What parts of the original play will you keep? What will you leave out? Make direct references to the play.
3.) Setting: Will you keep the setting on a Island between Europe and Africa? Why? Will you set the play in a different time? In a different place? Explain why.
4.) Casting focusing on these characters:
- Miranda
- Prospero
- Ariel
- Ferdinard
- Caliban
When casting be sure to explain what about the actor makes them a good fit for the character. Review the play for any information of what the characters might look like. Think about what sort of person each character is. You may describe a type of actor to portray the character or name a specific actor.
5.) Language: Will you keep the play's original language or make changes? Why? Refer to specific passages from the play when discussing the language.
