Problem 1.6:
In 1656, Otto von Guericke of Magdeburg presented his invention, a vacuum pump, through a demonstration that became a popular sensation. A metal sphere made of two hemispheres (now known as the Magdeburg hemispheres) was evacuated, so that a vacuum would hold the two pieces together. Von Guericke would then have several horses (by one account, 30 of them, in two teams of 15) pulling, unsuccessfully, to separate the hemispheres. The demonstration would end with the opening of a valve that removed the vacuum and allowed the hemispheres to separate. Suppose that the diameter of the sphere is 50 cm and the sphere is completely evacuated. The sphere is hung from the ceiling and you pull the other half with the force of your body weight. Will the hemispheres come apart? Support your answer with calculations.

At no load, rated voltage, and 1200 r/min, the armature current is 3 A. At full load and rated voltage, the line current is 40 A, and the flux is 5% less than its no-load value because of armature reaction. Compute the full-load speed.
The effect of a hazardous substance depends on the concentration of the substance that is present in the body's systems. The concentration depends on the stages of toxicokinetics What are the four main stages of toxicokinetics
The lower flammable limit (LFL) of methanol in air is 6.0 mole%. Calculate the temperature at which the equilibrium percentage of methanol vapor in a saturated methanol-air mixture would equal the LFL. (This temperature is a rough estimate of the ..
The exhaust pressure of the first turbine is 5.0 bars. The steam is then reheated to 440C. The condenser operates at one bar. Make-up is added at the condenser. Determine thermal efficiency of the cycle.
An overall average of 65,000 lb of water per 24-h day must be evaporated during each 30-day period. (b) An overall average of 81,000 lb of water per 24-h day must be evaporated during each 30-day period.
