CASE STUDY 1
Thirty six year old Johnson was in his last semester of his graduate program in Civil engineering. Father of two small children, he was anxious to get his degree so that he could spend more time with his family. Going to school and holding down a full-time job not only kept him from his family but also shifted more parental responsibility to his wife Julie but also the end was in sight, and he could look forward both to a better job and to being a better father and husband.
Johnson was following in the footsteps of his father, who received a graduate degree in chemical engineering just months before his 60th birthday! Julie understood how important getting a graduate degree was to Johnson, and she never complained about the long hours he spent studying. But she, too, was anxious for this chapter in their lives to end.
As part of his requirement to complete his graduate research and obtain his advanced degree, Johnson was required to develop a research report. Most of the data strongly supported Johnson’s conclusions as well as prior conclusions developed by others. However, a few aspects of the data were at variance and not fully consistent with the conclusions contained in his report. Convinced of the soundness of his report and concerned that inclusions of the ambiguous data would detract from and distort the essential thrust of the report, Johnson wondered if it would be all right to omit references to the ambiguous data.
In this case, it seems clear why Johnson is tempted to omit references to the ambiguous data. He is understandably anxious to graduate and move on to other challenges in his professional life. He is worried that full disclosure of his findings could slow down this process that has imposed a heavy burden on his family.
Questions:
a. Is it right for Johnson to omit reference to the data? Can the omission of the data be deceptive even when there is no intention to deceive?
b. Will Johnson’s actions have any implications for future researchers?
c. What are the relevant kinds of ethical considerations (Code of ethics) that should be brought to bear on the situation?
Determine the percentage increase in the discharge
: As part of a drainage improvement project, a drainage ditch will be straightened and cleaned. As a result, the lenght of the ditch will decrease from 1800 ft to 1400 ft and the mannings roughness factor will be reduced

What will be the porosity of the mixture
: You are furnished with three sizes of particles. One is gravel with porosity of 0.32, the second is a coarse grained sand with porosity of 0.37, and the third is a fine grained sand with porosity of 0.23. If the coarse grained sand

Determine redox state of sulfur in both the compounds
: Derive the porosity values for cubic, orthorhombic, and rhombohedral packing of spheres. Include sketches supporting your calculations of the bulk volumes of the unit cells.

Calculate the plasticity index the liquidity index
: The soil is under a rectangular concrete slab 15m x 50m, used as a foundation for a building. A water pipe, in diameter id located in a trench 450mm below the center of the slab. The trench running along the length of the slab,300mm wide and 450mm de..

Determine the volume and density of the body
: The volume and the average density of an irregularly shaped body are to be determined by using a spring scale. The body weighs 7200 N in air and 4790N in water. Determine the volume and density of the body. State your assumptions.

What is the absolute pressure at the surface of the mercury
: An airplane is flying at 10.6 km altitude. in its nonpressured cargo bay is a container of mercury 325 mm deep. The container is vented to the local atmosphere.

How long will it take for consolidation of a similar clay
: A clay specimen, 1 in thick (drained on top and bottom), was tested in the laboratory. For a given load increment, the time for 50% consolidation was 5 min 20 sec. How long will it take for 50 % consolidation of a similar clay layer in the field that..
